Boston, MA (February 10, 2025) – Emergency responders were quick to the scene after a Green Line train collided with a parked train at the MBTA East Somerville Station early Sunday morning. The accident occurred at approximately 12:30 AM, leading to the derailment of one car on each of the two-car trains involved.
Five individuals were injured in the crash. All four Green Line operators were transported to the hospital for evaluation, and one passenger was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital with a neck injury. Fortunately, all victims were reported to be conscious and alert at the time of transport. Further updates on their conditions have not yet been released.
The in-service train had five passengers aboard when the collision happened. Passengers and local residents expressed their concern over the incident. “That’s a little scary. I wouldn’t want to be on that train. I hope the people are okay,” said Eram Mohammed of Somerville. MBTA rider Kevin Phan echoed similar sentiments, stating, “This is crazy; this is insane. I was reading it this morning … I wasn’t really expecting all of this.”
The MBTA has implemented temporary service changes in response to the accident. Shuttle buses are replacing Green Line E branch service between Medford/Tufts and North Station while the investigation continues. Meanwhile, D Branch service has resumed regular operations to Union Square. Our thoughts are with those affected by this accident.
Train Accidents in Massachusetts
Train accidents, while less common than motor vehicle collisions, pose significant risks to passengers, operators, and the public. In Massachusetts, the MBTA operates one of the most extensive public transportation systems in the country, making safety and maintenance a top priority. However, incidents like the recent Green Line collision at East Somerville Station highlight the importance of continued vigilance and safety measures.
Derailments and collisions can result from various factors, including mechanical failures, human error, and signaling issues. In urban transit systems, such as the MBTA Green Line, high traffic volumes and complex routing can increase the likelihood of accidents. Passengers and operators alike are encouraged to stay alert and report any safety concerns to MBTA personnel.
Victims of train accidents may face physical injuries, emotional trauma, and financial burdens. Medical expenses, lost wages, and rehabilitation costs can quickly accumulate. It is crucial for those affected by such incidents to seek immediate medical attention and consult with legal professionals to understand their rights and explore options for compensation.
