Boone County, MO (February 7, 2025) – A two-vehicle collision occurred late Thursday evening at the intersection of Route Y and U.S. 63, resulting in one individual sustaining injuries. The crash took place at approximately 9:15 PM and involved significant vehicle damage, prompting a response from multiple emergency units.
According to reports from the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the incident involved a 2005 Chrysler 300C and a 2024 Volkswagen Atlas. The Chrysler, driven by a 21-year-old man from Columbia, was traveling eastbound and entered the roundabout west of U.S. 63 at an unsafe speed for the conditions. The vehicle began to skid, veering off the right side of the roadway, striking a curb, and continuing eastward. It eventually crossed into the opposite lane, colliding with the westbound Volkswagen Atlas, driven by a 29-year-old woman from Ashland.
Both vehicles sustained total damage and were towed from the scene by Carl’s Towing. The female driver of the Volkswagen was wearing her seatbelt at the time of the crash and suffered injuries. She was transported by University Ambulance to Boone Hospital for treatment. The male driver of the Chrysler was reportedly not wearing a safety device but did not sustain injuries requiring hospitalization.
The Boone County Sheriff’s Office and Ashland Police Department assisted at the scene, and the crash remains under investigation. Authorities are reviewing the role of speed and road conditions in the incident.
Our thoughts are with the injured driver, and we wish her a swift recovery.
Speed-Related Crashes in Missouri
Thursday night’s crash at Route Y and U.S. 63 underscores the significant risks associated with excessive speed, especially when navigating roundabouts and intersections. In Missouri, speed-related accidents remain a prevalent concern, contributing to a substantial number of roadway incidents and injuries each year.
Roundabouts are designed to improve traffic flow and reduce the likelihood of severe collisions, but they require drivers to adjust their speed appropriately. Failing to slow down when entering a roundabout can lead to loss of vehicle control, as seen in this incident. In Boone County and across Missouri, rural intersections and high-speed areas can present unique challenges, particularly at night when visibility is reduced.
The Missouri Department of Transportation has consistently highlighted the dangers of speeding, noting that even minor speed increases can significantly reduce reaction times and vehicle stability. In 2023, speed was a contributing factor in over 30% of fatal crashes across the state, emphasizing the importance of adhering to posted speed limits and adjusting driving behavior based on road conditions.
Drivers are encouraged to remain vigilant and cautious, particularly when approaching intersections, roundabouts, or unfamiliar roadways. Wearing seatbelts and maintaining safe speeds are critical steps in minimizing injury risks in the event of an accident. If you or a loved one has been involved in a speed-related crash, seeking timely medical attention and legal guidance can be essential to navigating the aftermath.
