Bonneville County, ID (September 26, 2024) – A tragic accident occurred on Wednesday afternoon, September 25 when a woman died after her SUV was struck by a train. The incident took place around 5 p.m. near the intersection of 65th South and South Yellowstone Highway.
According to the Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office, deputies and Idaho Falls firefighters responded to the scene of the “vehicle vs. train crash.” Upon arrival, they found witnesses assisting the 48-year-old driver, later identified as Mary Johnson of Bonneville County. Fire crews worked to extricate Johnson from her vehicle and transported her to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead due to traumatic internal injuries. It was reported that she was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident.
Witnesses informed deputies that Johnson’s SUV had been stopped on the tracks, positioned between the crossing arms and behind the stop light at the intersection, facing westbound. A northbound Union Pacific train had activated its emergency braking procedures and horn approximately a quarter mile before reaching the crossing but was unable to stop in time to avoid the collision.
No one else was in the vehicle, and no other injuries were reported in connection with the crash.
The Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating the incident and has issued reminders to drivers and pedestrians regarding safety around trains and railroad crossings. They emphasized that trains can operate at any time and have the right of way at crossings. Drivers are urged to stay back from tracks behind lights and crossing arms, obey blinking red lights, and never attempt to drive around crossing arms.
Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Mary Johnson during this difficult time.
