Bogard, MO (January 10, 2025) – A serious two-vehicle collision near Van Horn Church northeast of Bogard on Thursday afternoon left an 85-year-old woman with life-threatening injuries. The accident occurred around 12:35 PM at the intersection of U.S. 65 and Route M.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the incident happened when the 85-year-old Bosworth woman, driving a 2017 Ford Edge westbound, failed to stop at a stop sign. As a result, her SUV collided with a 2019 Chevrolet driven by a 31-year-old man from Gentry. The Chevrolet sustained extensive damage, while the Ford was totaled in the crash.

Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene and coordinated an airlift for the elderly woman, transporting her to Truman Medical Center in Kansas City with critical, life-threatening injuries. Authorities noted that she was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision. The 31-year-old driver, who was wearing his seatbelt, fortunately escaped the crash without injury.

Investigators are continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the crash. Further updates have not been released.

Our thoughts are with the injured woman and her family during this difficult time, and we hope for her swift recovery.

Stop-Sign Crashes in Missouri

Collisions at stop signs are a common occurrence in Missouri, especially in rural areas where visibility and signage may vary. These crashes often result in severe outcomes due to the high speeds on intersecting highways. Failure to stop at designated signs is a leading cause of serious accidents across the state, contributing to injuries, fatalities, and significant vehicle damage.

In this tragic incident near Bogard, the absence of a seatbelt significantly increased the severity of injuries sustained by the elderly driver. Missouri authorities strongly encourage all drivers to wear seatbelts, which remain one of the most effective measures to prevent serious injury or death in a collision.

To reduce accidents at rural intersections, officials recommend approaching stop signs with extra caution, especially when navigating unfamiliar areas. Slowing down and carefully checking for oncoming traffic can make a significant difference in preventing devastating accidents.
