Bluffton, IN (January 10, 2025) – A tragic accident occurred on Wednesday morning at approximately 9:18 AM at the intersection of US 224 and County Rd 450 E. Emergency crews were dispatched to the scene following a report of a severe collision involving a passenger vehicle and a semi-truck.

The investigation revealed that Rebecca L. Meier, a 45-year-old resident of Bluffton, IN, was traveling northbound on County Rd 450 E at a high rate of speed. Failing to stop at the stop sign at the intersection with US 224, she entered the path of a semi-trailer traveling eastbound. The semi-truck, driven by 29-year-old Travis D. Fett of Auburn, IN, was struck near its rear trailer tires by Meier’s vehicle. Tragically, the semi dragged the car several hundred feet before coming to a stop. Following the impact, Meier’s vehicle caught fire. She did not survive the injuries sustained in the crash.

Responders included the Wells County Sheriff’s Office, Ossian Police Department, Markle Police Department, Indiana State Police, Ossian Fire Rescue, Bluffton Fire, and the Wells County Coroner’s Office. Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision. Our thoughts are with all those affected by this devastating incident.

Truck Accidents in Indiana

Trucking accidents often result in severe injuries or fatalities due to the sheer size and weight of commercial vehicles. In Indiana, major highways and rural intersections can be hotspots for such incidents, frequently involving high speeds or failure to obey traffic controls. Factors contributing to these accidents may include driver fatigue, excessive speed, and failure to yield right of way.

In 2024, Indiana reported numerous truck-involved collisions, many of which resulted in fatalities or significant property damage. The state’s rural roads, such as US 224, often present unique challenges with limited visibility and high-speed traffic. For victims and their families, understanding their rights and the investigative process can be crucial.

If you or a loved one has been affected by a truck accident, seeking professional guidance is essential. Victims may be entitled to compensation for medical expenses, lost wages, and other damages stemming from the crash.
