Benton Harbor, MI (January 16, 2025)A serious collision involving an ambulance and two school buses occurred Wednesday afternoon at the intersection of M-139 and E Empire Ave, resulting in multiple injuries. The crash was reported at approximately 1:30 PM, according to the Berrien County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities stated that the ambulance, responding to an emergency call with its lights and sirens activated, was traveling north on M-139 when it approached the intersection. Witnesses noted that the northbound and southbound traffic lights had turned red just as an eastbound Berrien Regional Education Service Agency (RESA) school bus began crossing the intersection after the light turned green. The ambulance collided with the bus, which was then pushed into the westbound lanes of Empire Ave, where it struck a westbound First Student school bus head-on.

The ambulance paramedics suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries and were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. The First Student bus driver and assistant, along with the assistant on the Berrien RESA bus, sustained minor injuries. Thankfully, the Berrien RESA bus driver and the four students aboard the buses were unharmed. Investigators are continuing to review the circumstances of the crash. Our thoughts are with the injured individuals, and we hope for their complete recovery.

Emergency Vehicle and School Bus Safety in Michigan

This tragic incident highlights the risks at intersections involving emergency vehicles and school buses. Michigan law mandates that drivers yield to emergency vehicles, but timing issues at traffic signals and sudden decisions can lead to devastating accidents.

To help prevent such collisions, drivers should:

  • Stay alert at intersections, particularly when emergency vehicles are present.
  • Yield to emergency vehicles, ensuring a clear path for them to proceed.
  • Proceed cautiously when traffic signals change, especially at busy crossways.

Michigan also prioritizes school bus safety, focusing on minimizing risks to students and staff. The state regularly enforces safety initiatives to reduce incidents like this one.
