Benton Harbor, MI (January 16, 2025) – A serious collision involving an ambulance and two school buses occurred Wednesday afternoon at the intersection of M-139 and E Empire Ave, resulting in multiple injuries. The crash was reported at approximately 1:30 PM, according to the Berrien County Sheriff’s Office.
Authorities stated that the ambulance, responding to an emergency call with its lights and sirens activated, was traveling north on M-139 when it approached the intersection. Witnesses noted that the northbound and southbound traffic lights had turned red just as an eastbound Berrien Regional Education Service Agency (RESA) school bus began crossing the intersection after the light turned green. The ambulance collided with the bus, which was then pushed into the westbound lanes of Empire Ave, where it struck a westbound First Student school bus head-on.
The ambulance paramedics suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries and were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. The First Student bus driver and assistant, along with the assistant on the Berrien RESA bus, sustained minor injuries. Thankfully, the Berrien RESA bus driver and the four students aboard the buses were unharmed. Investigators are continuing to review the circumstances of the crash. Our thoughts are with the injured individuals, and we hope for their complete recovery.
