Belmont, NC (November 6, 2024) – A security guard was injured in a traffic accident at the Gaston College campus on Election Day. The incident occurred mid-morning on Tuesday when an 89-year-old driver mistakenly pressed the accelerator instead of the brake while backing out of a parking spot.
According to police reports, the security officer noticed that the driver was about to hit a safety cone in the parking lot. In an attempt to prevent the collision, the guard moved to reposition the cone. However, the driver inadvertently pressed the gas pedal, striking the guard and sending him onto the car’s hood before falling onto the pavement.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene promptly, and the injured security worker was taken to a local hospital for evaluation. Fortunately, Belmont Police reported that he is expected to recover from his injuries.
