Bellefontaine, OH (September 26, 2024) – A two-vehicle accident occurred Tuesday morning at the intersection of West Chillicothe Avenue and South Main Street, leading to the citation of one driver for multiple traffic violations.
According to the Bellefontaine Police Department, the first vehicle, operated by 52-year-old Key Jenkins of Bellefontaine, was stopped at a red light on West Chillicothe Avenue. Meanwhile, 55-year-old Brent Swartz, also from Bellefontaine, was traveling north on South Main Street and approaching the intersection with a green light.
Reports indicate that Jenkins, reportedly distracted, entered the intersection against the red light. Swartz attempted to brake but slid on the wet roadway, resulting in a collision with Jenkins’ vehicle. Fortunately, no injuries were reported from the accident, although both vehicles sustained minor damage.
Upon investigation, police discovered that Jenkins was driving under an administrative license suspension issued by the Bureau of Motor Vehicles. Jenkins explained that he was driving his roommate’s vehicle to the Bellefontaine Municipal Court to pay a court fine. He noted that his roommate was asleep at their residence when he left and acknowledged that he entered the intersection without stopping, treating the red light as a stop sign instead of obeying the traffic signal.
As a result of the incident, Jenkins has been cited for running the red light and driving under suspension.
Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this incident, and we encourage all drivers to remain vigilant and adhere to traffic signals to ensure safety on the road.
