Belle Plaine, MN (September 18, 2024) – A tragic accident occurred on Northbound Highway 169 at Belle Plaine Trail, resulting in one fatality. The incident took place shortly after 12:52 p.m. on September 16, when a 2012 Chevy Equinox, driven by 93-year-old Irene Isabell Castor of Belle Plaine, was traveling southbound in the northbound lanes of the highway. This vehicle collided head-on with a 2020 Chevy Silverado, driven by 38-year-old Douglas Alexander Johnson from Elk River.
Emergency services responded to the scene, where it was confirmed that both vehicles had deployed their airbags. Despite wearing seat belts, Irene Castor sustained fatal injuries in the crash, while Douglas Johnson suffered non-life-threatening injuries. He was reported to have been wearing his seat belt as well. Fortunately, no alcohol was involved in either driver’s operation of the vehicles.
The road conditions at the time of the accident were dry, which may have contributed to the visibility and driving conditions. The Scott County Sheriff’s Office and the Belle Plaine Police Department were on-site to assist with the investigation and manage traffic in the area.
