Beaver Township, OH (November 16, 2024) – Tragedy struck late Friday morning when a fiery crash claimed the life of one individual and left another in critical condition in Beaver Township. The incident occurred around 11:15 AM along the Market St extension, near the State Route 7 and W. Middletown Rd area, just south of the turnpike interchange.
According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the crash involved a 2020 Buick SUV. The vehicle veered off the side of the road and collided with a steel utility pole, resulting in the car becoming engulfed in flames. Karen Mraz, 77, of Columbiana, was a passenger in the vehicle and tragically lost her life in the crash. The male driver sustained serious injuries and was transported to the hospital in critical condition.
Beaver Township Fire Chief Larry Sauerwein, who was off duty at the time, happened to be nearby when the crash occurred. “We were a hundred yards up the street when it happened. When we heard it, my son and I both ran up to the car, which was fully involved with fire,” Sauerwein said. Several bystanders also rushed to the scene, attempting to rescue the victims from the burning vehicle.
Troopers confirmed that both occupants of the car were wearing seat belts, and there is no indication that drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash. The roadway was closed for over an hour while authorities conducted their investigation and cleared the scene. The Ohio State Highway Patrol is continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the accident.
Our deepest condolences go out to the family and loved ones of Karen Mraz during this heartbreaking time, and we extend our thoughts to the injured driver for a full recovery.
