Beaufort County, NC (December 23, 2024) – A tragic head-on collision on US 264 claimed a life on Saturday afternoon. The North Carolina State Highway Patrol responded to the scene involving two vehicles.
According to investigators, John Thomas Wiggins was driving a 2023 GMC Yukon westbound when he crossed the centerline, drifted off the road to the left, and then returned onto the roadway. His vehicle collided head-on with a 2010 Chrysler Van driven by Lucy Clark Gurgangus, striking her passenger directly. Following the collision, the Yukon overturned, and the Chrysler crossed the centerline.
Wiggins has been charged with Misdemeanor Death by Motor Vehicle, Left of Center, and Careless and Reckless Driving. The identity of the deceased passenger has not been released at this time.
