Bazetta Township, OH (November 3, 2024) – The Ohio State Highway Patrol’s Warren Post is currently investigating a fatal crash that occurred early Sunday morning on State Route 46. The incident took place at approximately 1:26 a.m. and involved a 2006 Nissan occupied by Britni Ulam, 35, of Niles, and Frank Walter, 31, of Cortland.
According to reports, the vehicle was traveling northbound on State Route 46 when it veered off the right side of the roadway. The Nissan struck a culvert, overturned, and crossed back over the roadway before going down an embankment. Tragically, both occupants were not wearing their seatbelts and were subsequently ejected from the vehicle.
Alcohol and speed are suspected to be contributing factors in this devastating crash. Additionally, a secondary crash occurred before first responders arrived on the scene. A 2014 Nissan, driven by Karen Bartone, 54, of Niles, was traveling southbound on State Route 46 when it struck Frank Walter, who was in the southbound lane following the initial collision. Fortunately, Bartone was not injured in the incident.
Emergency services from the Bazetta Township Police Department, Bazetta Township Fire Department, Cortland Police Department, and Cortland Fire Department responded to the scene. Bazetta Township Fire Department/EMS transported Britni Ulam to St. Elizabeth’s Hospital with serious injuries, while Frank Walter was pronounced dead at the scene.
