Batesburg-Leesville, SC (November 18, 2024) – A South Carolina man succumbed to injuries sustained in a crash days after the incident, which also left another person injured, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol and the Saluda County Coroner’s Office.
Joseph T. Ray, 35, of Saluda, passed away at Lexington Medical Center on November 15, three days after the two-vehicle collision. The crash occurred at approximately 5:45 a.m. on November 12 at the intersection of U.S. 178/Batesburg Highway and Duncan Rd near W.W. King Academy.
Ray was driving a 2005 Chevrolet pickup truck north on Duncan Rd when it collided with a 2010 Jeep traveling east on U.S. 178, according to Master Trooper William Bennett. The impact caused both vehicles to veer off the left side of the road. The Chevy crashed into a ditch while the Jeep overturned.
Ray, who was the sole occupant of the Chevrolet, was transported to Lexington Medical Center but later died from his injuries. The driver of the Jeep, who was also the only occupant of that vehicle, was hospitalized, though their condition remains unknown.
No other injuries were reported in the crash. Authorities have not confirmed whether seat belts were in use by either driver at the time of the collision, nor have they provided details about what caused the crash.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol continues to investigate the incident. Our deepest condolences go out to the family of Joseph T. Ray during this difficult time. We also extend our thoughts to the injured driver and wish them a swift recovery.
