Barton, NY (December 21, 2024) – A tragic head-on collision on state Route 34 in the town of Barton has claimed the lives of three individuals and left two others injured. The accident occurred on Friday afternoon, Dec. 20, just north of Waverly, according to the New York State Police.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene shortly after the call came in around 1:26 PM. The crash involved an SUV traveling northbound that crossed into the southbound lane, colliding head-on with a pick-up truck. The SUV was carrying four passengers, while the pick-up truck had one occupant.
The driver of the pick-up truck, a 68-year-old man from Athens, PA, was pronounced dead at the scene. Tragically, a 41-year-old male passenger from the Bronx in the backseat of the SUV also lost his life at the scene. A 38-year-old female backseat passenger from the Bronx succumbed to her injuries later at the hospital.
The SUV’s driver, a 42-year-old woman from the Bronx, was rushed to Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre in critical condition. The front-seat passenger of the SUV, a 56-year-old male from the Bronx, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was also transported to the hospital.
State Route 34 was closed for several hours as police conducted their investigation and cleared the scene. The cause of the crash remains under investigation. Our thoughts are with the families and loved ones of those affected by this devastating accident.
