Bardstown, KY (February 24, 2025) – Kentucky State Police responded to a fatal hit-and-run collision Friday night on the Bluegrass Parkway in Nelson County.
Authorities reported that the crash occurred around 11:00 p.m. near the 13-mile marker in the westbound emergency lane. According to the preliminary investigation, 20-year-old Nelson Pacheco, Jr. of Cicero, IL, was changing a tire on a disabled vehicle while another pedestrian, 20-year-old Amari Mays-Clark of Frankfort, stood near the rear driver’s side bumper.
A Jeep Grand Cherokee veered across the fog line and struck both pedestrians before fleeing the scene. Tragically, Mays-Clark was pronounced deceased by the Nelson County Coroner’s Office. Pacheco suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to Baptist Health Hardin for treatment.
Several hours later, the driver of the Jeep, identified as 48-year-old Jason T. Hamilton of Rineyville, turned himself in to the Kentucky State Police. He was charged with vehicular homicide while under the influence of alcohol, leaving the scene of an accident-failure to render aid, and fourth-degree assault (minor injury). Hamilton was booked into the Nelson County Detention Center.
The westbound lanes of the Bluegrass Parkway remained closed for several hours while authorities reconstructed the collision. Kentucky State Police Post 4, Nelson County EMS, and the Nelson County Coroner’s Office assisted at the scene. The investigation remains ongoing.

Understanding the Dangers of Hit-and-Run Accidents in Kentucky
Hit-and-run crashes are among the most dangerous types of accidents, often leaving victims without immediate medical assistance. When drivers flee the scene, it can delay life-saving emergency response efforts and complicate investigations. Kentucky law requires all drivers involved in a crash to stop, render aid, and report the incident to authorities.
Alcohol-related crashes remain a major concern in the state. Driving under the influence significantly increases the likelihood of severe or fatal collisions, especially on high-speed roadways like the Bluegrass Parkway. In 2024, the Kentucky State Police reported that nearly 20% of all fatal crashes in the state involved impaired drivers.
Victims of hit-and-run accidents and their families often face overwhelming emotional and financial hardships. Medical expenses, funeral costs, and legal proceedings can create additional stress in an already devastating situation. Seeking legal guidance can help those affected understand their rights and pursue the support they need.
