Barberville, FL (March 3, 2025) – A tragic crash in Barberville on Sunday afternoon claimed the life of a 68-year-old motorcyclist from Ocala, according to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP).
The fatal accident occurred at approximately 12:02 p.m. at the intersection of State Road 40 and Cypress Street. Officials report that a 35-year-old woman from DeLand was traveling westbound on SR-40 in a Kia Telluride when she attempted to make a left turn. As she turned, she entered the path of a 2007 Harley Davidson motorcycle that was also traveling westbound.
The motorcyclist attempted to avoid the crash by laying down his bike, but he was thrown forward upon impact and struck the right rear side of the SUV. Emergency responders arrived quickly, but the Ocala rider was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities confirmed that he was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.
The driver of the Kia remained at the scene and was uninjured. FHP continues to investigate the accident, and it is unclear whether any charges will be filed.
This tragedy marks the second motorcycle fatality in the area on Sunday, following an earlier deadly crash involving a Palm Coast rider in Flagler Beach.
Motorcycle Accidents in Florida
Florida consistently ranks as one of the most dangerous states for motorcyclists, with a high number of fatal crashes occurring each year. Left-turn collisions, such as the one in Barberville, are a leading cause of motorcycle fatalities. Many of these accidents happen when drivers misjudge an approaching motorcycle’s speed or fail to see them altogether.
Wearing a helmet significantly reduces the risk of serious head injuries in a crash. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that helmets are about 37% effective in preventing fatal injuries to motorcycle riders. Florida law allows riders over the age of 21 to go without helmets if they carry the required insurance coverage, but safety experts strongly recommend helmet use for all riders.
Motorcycle crashes can leave families facing overwhelming medical costs, funeral expenses, and emotional distress. Seeking legal guidance may help survivors understand their rights and pursue compensation for their losses.
