Avon, CT (January 23, 2025) – A devastating fire at Avon Place Apartments on Wednesday evening claimed the life of a 73-year-old woman. Avon police have identified the victim as Mary Jenson, who was found deceased inside the apartment where the fire originated.
Emergency crews responded to the scene around 3:45 PM after receiving reports of a fire. Firefighters evacuated residents and contained the blaze to a single unit. Residents in unaffected areas were allowed to return to their apartments once the situation was deemed safe.
Witnesses reported seeing smoke and hearing alarms before firefighters arrived. “Smoke in the hall. Yes. Definitely saw the smoke and smelled it ahead of time when the alarm went off,” said Joanne Madsen, a resident of Avon Place Apartments.
This tragic incident comes less than a year after another fire at the same complex in April 2024, which left dozens of families displaced. The recurrence of fires has left tenants shaken. “I’m not sure what to think. I mean, I’m glad the alarms went off and works,” said Alyssa Berthiaume, another resident.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the State Police Fire and Explosives Unit and the Avon Fire Marshal’s Office.
Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Mary Jenson, as well as the community affected by this tragic event.
Fire Safety in Apartment Complexes
Fires in multi-unit housing, such as the Avon Place Apartments, can be particularly dangerous due to the close proximity of residents and shared spaces. Proper maintenance of fire alarms, sprinkler systems, and evacuation procedures is crucial to minimizing risks and saving lives during emergencies.
Residents are encouraged to regularly test smoke alarms, practice evacuation routes, and report any fire hazards to property management or local authorities. Apartment managers and landlords should also ensure compliance with fire safety codes and conduct regular inspections.
