Austin, TX (October 23, 2024) – A serious incident unfolded on Tuesday evening in southeast Austin when a driver allegedly rammed into multiple pedestrians before crashing into a food truck, causing it to catch fire. The crash occurred around 4:30 p.m. in a parking lot on Elmont Drive near South Pleasant Valley Road.
According to Officer Austin Zarling of the Austin Police Department, the chaotic events began when a woman reported that her phone had been stolen. Officers responded to the theft report but were unable to locate the phone or identify the suspect. Approximately ten minutes after the officers left the scene, first responders received multiple 911 calls reporting a high-priority crash at the same location.
Upon arrival, police, fire, and medical personnel discovered several individuals on the ground injured, along with the food truck engulfed in flames. Capt. Christa Stedman, spokesperson for the Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services, confirmed that one person was transported to a hospital with serious, but not life-threatening, injuries. Another individual was also taken to a hospital for minor injuries, while two others received treatment for injuries at the scene.
Authorities believe the crash was instigated by the same woman who reported her phone stolen. Following the initial police response, she allegedly became enraged, suspecting that the person who stole her phone was her child’s father. In a fit of anger, she reportedly struck him and three bystanders before colliding with the food truck.
Our thoughts are with all those affected by this distressing incident.
