Austin, TX (September 23, 2024) – An apartment fire early Monday morning in South Austin led to the rescue of one individual and significant property damage. The incident occurred around 8 a.m. at The Bridge at Asher apartments, located off South Interstate 35, near Onion Creek.
Emergency responders from the Austin Fire Department (AFD) arrived on the scene after receiving reports of a fire on the first-floor balcony. Upon arrival, crews discovered a fire inside one of the units. Tragically, they found one person unconscious in the bathroom and quickly initiated a rescue. Medics from Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services (ATCEMS) performed life-saving measures on the victim on the lawn before transporting them to a local hospital in critical condition, facing life-threatening injuries.
AFD reported that the fire was extinguished within 10 minutes, and crews conducted thorough searches of nearby apartments to ensure the safety of all residents. Fortunately, neighbors who heard the smoke detectors activated promptly called 911, rescued a dog from the burning apartment, and went door-to-door to alert others to evacuate.
As a result of the fire, two residents have been displaced from their apartments. AFD indicated that the adjacent unit was also affected due to water damage from firefighting efforts. The estimated damages for the structure are approximately $18,000, with an additional $4,000 in damages to the contents inside the affected apartment. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
Our thoughts are with those impacted by this unfortunate incident, especially the individual who remains in critical condition.
