Aurora, CO (November 5, 2024) – A 46-year-old father, Jason Johnson, is currently hospitalized after being struck by a hit-and-run driver Saturday night on Geneva St, just south of 16th Avenue. The accident occurred shortly before 10 PM as Johnson was walking only a few blocks from his home. The driver did not stop, leaving Johnson with severe injuries.
According to his mother, Sandra Cox, Johnson was found unconscious and remembers nothing of the incident. He suffered multiple traumatic injuries, including brain and abdominal bleeding, fractures in his legs, facial lacerations, and extensive road rash. Cox shared her heartbreak, expressing disbelief that anyone could hit another person and abandon them. “He told me he didn’t know what happened. He just woke up in the hospital,” she recalled, holding back tears.
Aurora Police have reported that pedestrian-involved crashes are a growing concern in the city. In 2024 alone, there have been 172 pedestrian versus vehicle accidents, 13 of which were fatal. This hit-and-run incident is part of a troubling trend that reflects a rise in pedestrian injuries across Colorado.
The driver responsible remains unidentified, and Cox suspects that factors such as impaired driving, lack of insurance, or an invalid license may have played a role. “Anybody in their right mind, if it was an accident, would stop,” Cox stated, highlighting her frustration and confusion over the driver’s decision to flee.
In the midst of this ordeal, Cox expressed deep gratitude for a stranger who stopped to call for help, likely preventing further harm to her son. “I want to meet and thank that person for stopping before he could’ve been hit by another car,” she said. “They didn’t have to, but they did.”
The Growing Issue of Pedestrian Accidents in Colorado
Colorado has seen a troubling rise in pedestrian accidents, especially in urban areas like Aurora, where traffic density and pedestrian movement increase risks. Hit-and-run incidents are particularly devastating, as they leave victims without immediate assistance, often leading to more severe injuries. Pedestrians are especially vulnerable, and Colorado’s statistics reflect the need for increased awareness and accountability on the roads.
Victims of pedestrian accidents often face extensive recovery times and significant medical expenses, which can be overwhelming, especially when a hit-and-run driver is involved. Having access to supportive resources and understanding legal rights can be essential for victims and their families as they navigate these challenges.
