Augusta, ME (September 16, 2024) – A tragic multi-vehicle crash on Friday afternoon resulted in the death of a woman and significant traffic disruptions on Interstate 95. The incident occurred around 3:09 PM in the southbound lanes, which had been stopped due to a construction zone lane closure.
According to the Maine Department of Public Safety spokesperson Shannon Moss, the crash took place in the area of Exit 113. A pickup truck rear-ended an SUV that was among the vehicles stopped in traffic, leading to a chain reaction involving five vehicles.
The passenger in the SUV, identified as 68-year-old Sari Ohmart of Brewer, was pronounced dead at the scene. Additionally, a dog that was in the vehicle also lost its life in the crash.
Moss reported that while other individuals sustained injuries in the accident, they were not life-threatening. Those injured were transported to Maine General Hospital in Augusta for medical treatment.
All five vehicles involved in the crash were towed from the scene, and the southbound lanes of I-95 were closed temporarily, with traffic being diverted off at Exit 113. Fortunately, the northbound lanes remained unaffected by the incident.
As of 5:50 PM on Friday, all southbound lanes were reopened, allowing traffic to resume normal flow. The Maine State Police are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
