Auglaize County, OH (January 30, 2025) – An 18-year-old man suffered serious injuries after being ejected from his vehicle during a crash on US Route 33 Wednesday afternoon, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP).
Troopers responded to the crash around 2:37 p.m. on the westbound lanes of US Route 33 near milepost 14. An initial investigation determined that a 61-year-old man driving a GMC Savana and an 18-year-old man operating a Ford Expedition were both traveling westbound when the collision occurred.
According to OSHP officials, the crash happened when the 18-year-old driver attempted to pass the GMC by moving into the left lane. During the maneuver, the Ford Expedition struck the GMC, veered off the left side of the road, and hit a raised median. This impact launched the vehicle airborne before it landed in the eastbound lanes, overturned, and slid off the right side of the road.
The GMC also slid off the roadway due to the impact.
Authorities reported that the 18-year-old driver was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash and was ejected from the vehicle. He was transported to Lima Memorial Hospital with serious injuries. A 19-year-old passenger in the Ford also sustained injuries and was taken to Lima Memorial for treatment.
The driver of the GMC was not injured in the collision.
Officials do not believe alcohol or drugs played a role in the crash. The Ohio State Highway Patrol Wapakoneta Post is continuing its investigation.
Car Accidents in Ohio
Ohio roadways, including high-speed routes like US Route 33, often see serious accidents caused by passing maneuvers, loss of control, and failure to wear seat belts. Seat belt use is one of the most critical factors in reducing the risk of serious injuries in crashes, and studies have shown that ejections significantly increase the likelihood of severe or fatal outcomes.
Victims of motor vehicle crashes often face long recovery periods, medical expenses, and emotional distress following an accident. Seeking legal guidance and understanding available resources can help injured individuals navigate the aftermath and secure the support they need.
If you or someone you know has been hurt in a car accident, taking appropriate steps to protect your rights and seek assistance can be crucial to recovery.
