Auburn, WA (January 10, 2025) – A dramatic five-vehicle, chain-reaction crash occurred Friday morning on westbound State Route 18 near Auburn, leaving vehicles in precarious positions and causing traffic backups for miles. The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) reported the crash just east of Auburn Way at approximately 7:25 AM.
The crash involved a car flipped onto its roof and pushed onto the hood of another car, which was partially wedged under an SUV. The SUV’s back end rested on a car behind it. Despite the chaotic scene, fire crews treated victims for only minor injuries.
Traffic was backed up for three miles, primarily due to the jumbled wreckage rather than the left lane closure. The left lane was reopened by 8:40 AM, allowing traffic to return to normal.
Multi-Vehicle Crashes in Washington
Chain-reaction crashes, like the one on SR-18, highlight the risks of high-traffic areas and the potential for serious pileups. In Washington, such incidents often occur during peak commute hours when close vehicle spacing and sudden stops can lead to collisions.
Drivers are reminded to maintain safe following distances and remain attentive to traffic flow to reduce the risk of multi-vehicle accidents. Adhering to speed limits and avoiding distractions are critical in ensuring safety on busy roadways.
