Auburn, ME (September 23, 2024) – Investigators from the Fire Marshal’s Office were called to the scene of a tragic residential fire at 790 Washington Street North in Auburn early Monday morning, September 22 around 2:30 a.m. Upon arrival, investigators discovered human remains at the site of the fire. The remains have since been transported to the Office of Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta for positive identification.
The deceased is believed to be 60-year-old Steven Berry, who lived alone at the residence. The cause of the fire remains undetermined due to the extensive damage caused by the flames.
Multiple agencies responded to the scene, including Auburn Fire and Rescue and Lewiston Fire. Additional assistance was provided by New Gloucester Fire, Mechanic Falls Fire, Auburn Police, Auburn Public Works, and the Auburn Water District.
