Atchison, MO (November 18, 2024) – A tragic multi-vehicle accident occurred early Sunday morning on I-29 northbound at the 123-mile marker, approximately six miles north of Watson. The crash involved four vehicles and resulted in three fatalities and multiple injuries, including a juvenile occupant. Emergency responders, including Atchison Fire and Rescue and the Atchison Co Coroner, worked extensively at the scene.
The collision took place around 7:22 AM when a 2023 Kia Sorento, traveling southbound in the northbound lanes, collided head-on with a northbound 2013 Ford Focus. The impact caused both vehicles to veer off the west side of the road. The Kia struck a bridge abutment and caught fire, while the Ford overturned, ejecting a juvenile occupant. A Volvo VNL tractor-trailer, attempting to avoid the crash, collided with a southbound 2023 Chevrolet Tahoe, pushing both vehicles off the road into the median.
First responders were quick to arrive, providing care to the injured. Tragically, three individuals, including both drivers of the Kia and Ford and an occupant of the Ford, were pronounced deceased on the scene by Atchison Co Coroner Shawn Minter. Additional individuals sustained injuries ranging from minor to serious. Among the injured were a one-year-old male occupant of the Ford, who was transported to George C. Grape Hospital in Hamburg, IA, and an 18-year-old female occupant of the Ford, who was airlifted to Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, NE. A 32-year-old male driver of the Chevrolet Tahoe suffered minor injuries and was also transported for treatment.
The vehicles involved sustained varying degrees of damage, with several towed from the scene by Benefiel’s Tow. Authorities are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident.
