Atchison County, MO (December 16, 2024) – A serious injury collision involving two semi-trucks occurred early Sunday morning on Interstate 29 northbound near mile marker 108.8, approximately one mile south of Rock Port. The crash was reported at around 12:20 a.m.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, a 2013 Kenworth T6, driven by a 28-year-old male from Corning, Iowa, was traveling northbound at a high rate of speed when it overtook a 2002 Freightliner driven by a 67-year-old male from Miami, Florida. As the Kenworth attempted to avoid the Freightliner’s rear towed unit, it collided with the back corner of the unit. The Kenworth then veered off the east side of the roadway and overturned, coming to rest on its passenger side facing west. The Freightliner came to a controlled stop in the driving lane of I-29.
The driver of the Kenworth sustained serious injuries and was transported by Atchison Holt Ambulance District to Mosaic Life Care in St. Joseph for treatment. The Freightliner driver was not reported injured. Both vehicles were towed from the scene by Double M of Rock Port due to the extent of the damage, with the Kenworth being totaled.
The Atchison County Sheriff’s Department assisted at the scene, and the crash remains under investigation.
