Atchison County, MO (November 19, 2024) – A three-vehicle crash involving two semi-trucks and a passenger vehicle occurred on I-29 northbound at mile marker 106.8, approximately 3.5 miles south of Rock Port, on Monday evening. The accident, reported at 6:33 p.m., resulted in multiple injuries and significant damage to the vehicles involved.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the collision began when the front of a 2020 Freightliner Cascadia, driven by a 32-year-old man from Council Bluffs, IA, struck the rear of a 2017 Toyota Camry, driven by a 79-year-old man from Lawrence, KS, in the passing lane. The impact caused the Camry to veer into the driving lane, where it was struck again in the rear by a 2022 Freightliner Cascadia, driven by a 52-year-old woman from Omaha, NE.
The Camry sustained total damage and came to rest off the east side of I-29. The second Freightliner overturned onto its driver side and skidded to a stop, blocking the northbound lanes. The first Freightliner came to a controlled stop on the northbound shoulder.
Emergency responders, including Atchison County Sheriff’s Office and Atchison Holt EMS, arrived to assist. The driver of the overturned Freightliner suffered serious injuries and was transported to Nemaha County Hospital before being transferred to Bergan Mercy Hospital for further treatment. The driver of the Camry sustained injuries and was also transported to Nemaha County Hospital. The driver of the first Freightliner was uninjured.
Authorities continue to investigate the crash, focusing on contributing factors such as traffic conditions and vehicle spacing.
Our thoughts are with those injured in this accident, and we hope for their swift and complete recovery.
Multi-Vehicle Crashes in Missouri
Multi-vehicle collisions, particularly those involving semi-trucks, can have devastating consequences. Missouri’s interstates, such as I-29, often see such incidents due to heavy traffic, driver distractions, or unsafe following distances. Collisions involving large trucks can be particularly hazardous because of their size and the force they generate on impact.
Missouri law emphasizes the importance of maintaining safe speeds and adequate following distances, especially on high-speed roadways. In addition, proper situational awareness is critical to avoid chain-reaction crashes.
Victims of multi-vehicle accidents often face significant medical expenses, emotional trauma, and property damage. Seeking legal and financial support can help ensure they receive the compensation and assistance needed for recovery.
