Antwerp Twp, MI (January 29, 2025) – A 96-year-old man tragically lost his life in a multi-vehicle crash Tuesday afternoon in Antwerp Township, according to the Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office.

The accident occurred around 3:15 p.m. at the intersection of 58th Avenue and County Road 657. Authorities reported that the elderly driver was traveling eastbound in a Ford F-150 when he failed to stop at a stop sign. His vehicle was then struck on the side by a northbound Chevy Silverado. The impact forced the F-150 into a Nissan NV200 work van that had been stopped at the intersection.

Emergency responders arrived to find the 96-year-old driver partially ejected through the rear window of his truck. Sadly, he was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators noted that he was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.

The driver and passenger of the Chevy Silverado were transported to a local hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the Nissan was uninjured.

Authorities have stated that alcohol was not a factor in the collision, though it remains unclear if the elderly driver suffered a medical event before the crash. The Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the incident.

Our deepest condolences go out to the family and loved ones of the victim during this difficult time.

Intersection Accidents in Michigan

Crashes at intersections are among the most dangerous types of roadway incidents, often leading to severe injuries or fatalities. When a vehicle fails to stop at a posted sign, the risk of a high-impact collision significantly increases, particularly when larger vehicles like pickup trucks are involved.

In Michigan, intersections with stop signs require heightened awareness from all drivers. Accidents like this highlight the importance of defensive driving and the need for seatbelt use, which significantly reduces the risk of fatal injuries in crashes.

Additionally, elderly drivers may experience challenges such as slower reaction times, vision impairment, or medical emergencies while behind the wheel. While age alone is not a determining factor in crashes, ensuring regular health checkups and vehicle safety measures can help prevent such tragic incidents.

Families affected by serious intersection crashes often face overwhelming emotional and financial burdens. Understanding legal options, including potential claims for medical costs and wrongful death, can be critical in these situations.

If you or a loved one has been involved in a serious intersection accident, support is available. Seeking professional guidance can help you navigate your options during this difficult time.
