Ankeny, IA (November 9, 2024) – A wrong-way crash on Interstate 35 during Thursday’s evening rush hour claimed the life of a 91-year-old man and left two other drivers critically injured. The incident caused significant traffic disruptions near the east Mixmaster and SE Corporate Woods Drive around 5 p.m., according to the Iowa State Patrol.
The crash occurred when Paul Jacques of Minnesota, driving a 2011 Chevrolet Impala northbound in the southbound lanes, collided with a Toyota Highlander. The force of the collision caused the Highlander to go airborne, striking a Toyota Sequoia that could not avoid the crash. A fourth vehicle narrowly avoided Jacques’ car but hit a concrete barrier while taking evasive action.
Jacques was transported to Mercy Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. The drivers of the Highlander and Sequoia were critically injured and rushed to local hospitals. The circumstances surrounding how Jacques entered the wrong direction on the interstate remain under investigation by authorities.
We extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of Paul Jacques and wish a full recovery to those injured in this tragic accident.
