Anderson, IN (February 3, 2025) – A tragic incident unfolded early Sunday morning in Anderson, where a shooting and subsequent crash left one woman dead and two others injured.

According to the Anderson Police Department (APD), officers responded to a shooting at Sonny Ray’s Café in the 1500 block of S Madison Ave around 3:00 AM. Upon arrival, they discovered an injured female lying in the roadway. A second injured female was found in front of a nearby home, and both were transported to a local hospital for treatment.

Authorities later learned that a third female victim had checked herself into a hospital after being struck by a vehicle in the aftermath of the shooting. The first woman found by officers was later transferred to a hospital in Indianapolis for further treatment but ultimately succumbed to her injuries.

The Marion County Coroner’s Office identified the deceased victim as 26-year-old Dayla Swain. The identities and current conditions of the other two injured victims have not been released. It remains unclear if the individuals involved were adults or juveniles.

Investigators have not provided further details regarding the events leading up to the shooting and crash. The APD Violent Crimes Unit is actively investigating the incident to determine what transpired and identify any suspects involved.

Our thoughts are with the victims and their families during this difficult time.

Gun Violence and Traffic-Related Injuries in Indiana

Incidents involving both gun violence and traffic-related injuries pose significant concerns across Indiana, particularly in cities like Anderson. High-crime areas and late-night activity often contribute to the risks associated with shootings, which can also lead to secondary accidents and injuries.

According to the Indiana State Department of Health (ISDH), firearm-related injuries remain a leading cause of death in the state. Many of these incidents occur in public areas, often impacting bystanders or escalating into additional violence. When shootings occur near busy streets or public establishments, the likelihood of further injuries due to panic, fleeing crowds, or vehicle accidents increases.

Pedestrian-involved crashes, such as the one reported in this incident, can also result in serious or fatal injuries. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) emphasizes that pedestrian safety is a growing concern in urban areas, especially at night when visibility is reduced. Drivers and pedestrians must remain vigilant, particularly in high-traffic and high-crime areas, to avoid tragic incidents like this one.
