Anchorage, AK (February 11, 2025) – Emergency responders were quick to the scene after a fire broke out Sunday afternoon at a duplex in the Muldoon neighborhood of Anchorage. The Anchorage Fire Department reported that the blaze occurred in the 3600 block of Gayot Dr, with the first calls coming in at 4:12 PM. Crews from five stations, totaling thirteen units, arrived on the scene just after 4:15 PM.

Upon arrival, firefighters found one side of the duplex engulfed in heavy flames originating from the garage, with thick smoke filling the residence. The fire quickly extended from the garage into the house, creating a dangerous situation for residents and emergency personnel alike.

One resident was seriously injured and transported to a local hospital for treatment. The Anchorage Fire Department indicated that the cause of the fire is still under investigation, but preliminary findings suggest it may have started while the injured resident was working on a vehicle in the garage.

Half of the duplex sustained significant damage from both fire and smoke, while the other half experienced smoke damage. Firefighters worked diligently to control the blaze and prevent further spread to neighboring structures. Our thoughts are with the injured resident and those affected by this incident.

Residential Fires in Alaska

Residential fires pose a serious risk to communities across Alaska, particularly in densely populated neighborhoods like Muldoon in Anchorage. Fires can spread rapidly, especially in duplexes and multi-family homes, leading to significant property damage and personal injury.

Common causes of residential fires include electrical malfunctions, cooking accidents, and issues related to heating equipment. In this case, the fire appears to have started while a vehicle was being worked on in the garage, underscoring the importance of taking safety precautions when handling flammable materials or operating machinery indoors.

The Anchorage Fire Department and other local agencies regularly emphasize fire prevention strategies, including the installation of smoke detectors, maintaining fire extinguishers, and ensuring proper ventilation when working with combustible materials. Residents are also encouraged to have an emergency plan in place and to know the safest routes for evacuation in case of a fire.

If you or someone you know has been affected by a residential fire in Anchorage, it is important to seek medical attention for any injuries and to connect with local support resources for recovery assistance. Legal guidance may also be necessary to navigate insurance claims and address potential liability issues related to property damage.
