Allendale Twp, MI (January 22, 2025) – A 19-year-old Allendale driver sustained injuries after his car collided with a semi-truck Tuesday afternoon on Lake Michigan Drive near North Campus Drive, close to Grand Valley State University. The crash occurred at approximately 2:54 p.m. amid whiteout conditions caused by lake-effect snow.
The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office reported that the semi-truck, driven by a 54-year-old man from Cedar Springs, was attempting a Michigan U-turn to head westbound on Lake Michigan Drive when it was struck by the teen’s westbound black Acura TL. Due to the limited visibility, the semi-truck driver failed to see the approaching car. The Acura slid over halfway underneath the trailer during the collision.
Emergency responders, including Allendale Township Fire and Wright Tallmadge Fire, provided on-site patient care and managed traffic while the westbound lane of Lake Michigan Drive remained temporarily closed. Life EMS transported the teen driver to a hospital in Grand Rapids with minor injuries. The semi-truck driver was uninjured.
This incident is part of a series of crashes reported across West Michigan as lake-effect snow showers and frigid temperatures create hazardous road conditions. Authorities continue to investigate the crash.
Navigating Whiteout Conditions in Michigan
Whiteout conditions, like those present during this crash, are a frequent hazard in Michigan during the winter months. Sudden and severe reductions in visibility, combined with icy roads, make such conditions particularly dangerous. Drivers are encouraged to reduce speeds, avoid abrupt maneuvers, and use headlights during heavy snow to increase visibility.
This crash emphasizes the need for caution, especially when performing complex maneuvers like U-turns or navigating busy roadways. For truck drivers, additional vigilance is crucial due to the vehicle’s size and limited maneuverability.
