Alda, NE (March 5, 2025) – A devastating crash on Interstate 80 near Grand Island claimed the lives of two people Tuesday afternoon. The accident occurred around 4 p.m. when the driver of a westbound Chevrolet Trailblazer lost control, crossed the median, and collided with an eastbound semi-truck, according to the Nebraska State Patrol (NSP).
Authorities identified the victims as 62-year-old Daniel Ortega Marroquin, who was driving, and his daughter, 25-year-old Emelin Ortega Rodas. Both were from Lexington and were pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the semi sustained injuries that were not considered life-threatening and was transported to a hospital for treatment. Officials confirmed that severe winter weather played a role in the crash. The investigation remains ongoing.
Since the winter storm began on Tuesday, troopers have responded to 28 crashes and assisted over 300 stranded motorists. NSP urges drivers to remain cautious as slick roads and strong winds continue to impact travel conditions.
