Aiken, SC (November 18, 2024) – A police pursuit early Monday morning ended in a fatal crash on Laurens Street Northwest near Hampton Avenue within the Aiken city limits. The crash occurred at approximately 12:40 a.m., according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
Authorities reported that the driver of a 2017 Kia SUV, identified as 39-year-old Michael Bailey of Norfolk, Virginia, was attempting to evade a deputy from the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office. The pursuit began after Bailey, who was pulled over for a suspected DUI, fled the scene when asked to exit his vehicle.
During the pursuit, the Kia SUV veered off the road to the left, overturned, and struck a tree. Bailey was pronounced dead at the scene at 1:20 a.m., according to the Aiken County Coroner’s Office.
A passenger in the SUV sustained injuries and was transported to Wellstar MCG Health for treatment. The identity and condition of the passenger have not been disclosed.
