Acadia Parish, LA (February 12, 2025) – A tragic two-vehicle crash on Louisiana Highway 92 (W Whitney Street) near Everglade Road claimed the life of a Morse woman on Monday afternoon.
According to Louisiana State Police Troop I, the collision occurred shortly after 4:00 p.m. when 50-year-old Cora Barrios was traveling west on LA Hwy 92 in a 2006 Chevrolet Trailblazer. At the same time, 78-year-old Raymond Knieper was driving a 2011 Chevrolet Silverado behind her vehicle.
Investigators determined that as Barrios slowed to turn right onto Everglade Road, Knieper’s Silverado failed to reduce speed and struck the rear of her SUV. Barrios, who was not wearing a seatbelt, suffered severe injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries. Knieper, who was properly restrained, sustained moderate injuries and was also transported for medical treatment.
Standard toxicology samples were collected from both drivers and are being analyzed as part of the ongoing investigation. Authorities continue to review the circumstances surrounding the crash.
Our thoughts are with the family and loved ones of the victim during this difficult time.
Rear-End Collisions and Seatbelt Safety in Louisiana
Rear-end collisions are one of the most common types of vehicle crashes, often caused by distracted driving, speeding, or failure to maintain a safe following distance. Crashes like the one on LA Hwy 92 highlight the dangers of not wearing a seatbelt, as unrestrained occupants face a significantly higher risk of serious or fatal injuries in collisions.
According to the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission, a substantial percentage of fatal crashes involve unrestrained drivers or passengers. Seatbelts are one of the most effective ways to reduce injury severity and save lives in motor vehicle accidents.
For families affected by fatal crashes, understanding legal options can be crucial in handling the financial and emotional burdens that follow. Wrongful death claims, insurance considerations, and accident investigations can be complex, and seeking professional guidance may provide clarity on the next steps.
