Abita Springs, LA (October 10, 2024) – A severe crash occurred on Tuesday morning, October 8 resulting in the deaths of two individuals in St. Tammany Parish. The Louisiana State Police (LSP) began their investigation around 6:45 a.m. after receiving reports of the incident on Louisiana Highway 36 near Kipp Road.
Preliminary investigations revealed that 67-year-old Jeanna Dysart of Abita Springs was driving a 2019 Honda Fit eastbound on Highway 36. At the same time, 29-year-old Samantha Gaines of Pearl River was traveling westbound in a 2020 GMC Acadia. For reasons still under investigation, the Honda crossed the centerline and collided head-on with the GMC.
Tragically, Dysart was not wearing a seatbelt and was pronounced dead at the scene. Gaines was also pronounced dead at the scene, although it remains unclear whether she was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.
Additionally, a child was a passenger in the GMC at the time of the accident. Fortunately, the child sustained only moderate injuries and was assisted by a passing driver until emergency services arrived to transport them to a local hospital.
Part of Highway 36 was closed for several hours while troopers conducted their investigation, but the roadway has since reopened. LSP officials have collected routine toxicology samples from both drivers as part of the ongoing investigation.
