Madison County, MO (March 10, 2025) – Two people sustained moderate injuries following a collision involving an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) and a passenger car on County Road 229, four miles east of Cherokee Pass. The crash occurred at approximately 5:10 p.m. Sunday evening.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, a 2015 Kia Forte, driven by a 33-year-old woman from Fredericktown, crossed the center of the roadway and struck a northbound 1992 Polaris Sportsman ATV. The impact caused the ATV to overturn, ejecting both the driver and a passenger.
Emergency responders arrived quickly to assist the injured. The ATV driver, an 18-year-old male from Fredericktown, was wearing a safety device but still sustained moderate injuries. His passenger, a 16-year-old female, was not wearing any protective gear and also suffered moderate injuries. Both were transported by ambulance to Madison Medical Center for treatment.
Both vehicles sustained minor damage and were able to be driven from the scene. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
We hope for a full recovery for those injured and remind all motorists to use caution when sharing the road with off-road vehicles.
ATV Accidents in Missouri
All-terrain vehicles (ATVs) are designed for off-road use, but in rural areas like Madison County, they often share roadways with passenger vehicles. These mixed-traffic conditions can increase the risk of serious accidents, especially when safety precautions such as helmets and protective gear are not used.
Missouri law does not require ATV riders over 18 to wear helmets, but safety officials strongly recommend them. Studies show that helmet use significantly reduces the severity of injuries in ATV rollovers and crashes. In this accident, the lack of protective gear contributed to the injuries sustained by the 16-year-old passenger.
Additionally, vehicles crossing the centerline are a leading cause of roadway collisions. Drivers must remain alert, avoid distractions, and maintain full control of their vehicles to prevent accidents. When ATVs are present, extra caution is necessary due to their smaller size and lower visibility compared to standard vehicles.
Victims of ATV-related accidents may require extensive medical care and rehabilitation. Understanding legal rights and potential compensation options is essential for those injured in these types of crashes.
As authorities continue to investigate this crash, drivers are reminded to stay in their lanes, watch for smaller vehicles, and always prioritize safety on the road.
