Jefferson County, MO (March 10, 2025) – A two-vehicle collision on Interstate 55 left one person injured Sunday afternoon. The crash occurred at approximately 3:37 p.m. north of the 172.8-mile marker, requiring emergency response and vehicle recovery.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, a 2017 Ford F-150, driven by a 28-year-old man from Plantersville, TX, was traveling southbound in the right lane when the driver attempted to turn left into an emergency vehicle turnaround in the median. This maneuver put the vehicle directly into the path of a 2020 Hyundai Elantra, which was traveling in the left lane. The front right of the Elantra collided with the front left of the F-150, causing the truck to strike the median cable barrier.

The driver of the Hyundai, a 20-year-old woman from Festus, MO, sustained injuries in the crash. Emergency responders from the Joachim Plattin Ambulance District transported her to Mercy Hospital Jefferson for treatment. Both vehicles suffered extensive damage and were towed from the scene by Haberberger Towing.

Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.

We hope for the injured driver’s quick recovery and remind all motorists to stay alert and cautious on Missouri highways.

Highway Turnaround Accidents in Missouri

Interstate highways are designed for high-speed travel, and sudden lane changes or unexpected turns can create dangerous conditions. Emergency vehicle turnarounds are not intended for general traffic use, and drivers attempting to make improper turns across multiple lanes put themselves and others at significant risk.

Missouri law prohibits unauthorized vehicles from using emergency turnarounds on highways. Attempting to turn left from the right lane, as seen in this I-55 crash, often leads to dangerous T-bone or head-on collisions. The impact of these crashes can cause serious injuries, extensive vehicle damage, and major traffic disruptions.

Drivers must always be aware of their surroundings, avoid sudden lane changes, and adhere to highway regulations. Those injured in accidents caused by improper turns may be eligible for compensation for medical expenses, lost wages, and other damages. Seeking legal guidance can help victims understand their options and rights.

As law enforcement investigates this crash, motorists are urged to follow traffic laws, avoid dangerous maneuvers, and stay attentive to prevent collisions.
