Zebulon, NC (March 10, 2025) – A Raleigh police officer was seriously injured in a three-vehicle crash on US Highway 64 near Lizard Lick Rd early Sunday morning. The crash, which occurred around 4:30 AM, led to significant road closures as emergency responders worked to assist the victims and clear the scene.
According to investigators, the crash was initiated when a 2011 Ford Edge, traveling eastbound, struck the center guardrail and became disabled in the dark roadway with no headlights. Moments later, an off-duty Raleigh police officer driving a 2023 Jeep Wrangler and another driver in a 2021 Toyota Camry collided with the stalled vehicle. The impact caused the Jeep to spin out of control and overturn multiple times.
The Raleigh officer sustained serious injuries and was transported to the hospital, where she is expected to recover. The drivers of the Ford Edge and the Toyota Camry were also taken to the hospital for medical evaluation.
All eastbound lanes of US-64 at Exit 432 remained closed until approximately 7 AM as authorities investigated the scene and cleared the wreckage. The North Carolina State Highway Patrol is continuing its investigation into the circumstances of the crash. Our thoughts are with those affected, and we wish them a full recovery.
Highway Crashes and Disabled Vehicles in North Carolina
Highway accidents, particularly those involving disabled vehicles, pose a significant risk to motorists. In situations where a car becomes stalled on a high-speed roadway like US-64, the lack of visibility and reaction time can lead to severe multi-vehicle crashes.
Drivers are urged to take immediate precautions if their vehicle becomes disabled, including turning on hazard lights, moving to the shoulder if possible, and calling for assistance. Likewise, other motorists should remain vigilant, reduce speed in dark or low-visibility areas, and be prepared for sudden obstacles on the road.
The North Carolina Department of Transportation and state law enforcement agencies continue to emphasize the importance of roadway awareness and defensive driving to reduce the risk of serious accidents.
