Paris, NY (March 9, 2025) – A serious two-car collision on Route 8 in the Town of Paris left two people in critical condition on Saturday evening, according to Oneida County Sheriff Robert M. Maciol.
The crash occurred around 5:30 PM, just north of Larson Rd, when a 2019 Ford Escape traveling northbound lost control on the snow-covered roadway. The vehicle, driven by 29-year-old Youma Bashir, swerved across the double solid yellow line into the path of a 2022 Toyota Highlander driven by Denise Land. The impact left multiple people injured, prompting an extensive emergency response.
The Ford Escape carried three passengers: 52-year-old Haga Zagrin, 24-year-old Sharif Bashir, and 26-year-old Koudi Bashir, all from Utica. Cassville Fire Department crews worked to extricate them from the wreckage before they were transported for medical treatment.
The Toyota Highlander, also traveling northbound, carried two passengers: a 16-year-old female and 20-year-old Jadyn Land, both from Cassville. They were also extricated by emergency crews and transported to Wynn Hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
Authorities confirmed that Youma Bashir remains in critical but stable condition, while Koudi Bashir is also listed in critical condition. Haga Zagrin and Sharif Bashir sustained injuries but are reported to be in stable condition.

Winter Driving Conditions and Crash Risks in Upstate New York
Snow-covered roads and icy conditions contribute to many vehicle accidents in Upstate New York, particularly during late winter and early spring. When temperatures fluctuate, melting snow can refreeze, creating slippery patches that make controlling a vehicle more difficult, especially at higher speeds.
Drivers must take extra precautions during hazardous weather, including reducing speed, increasing following distances, and ensuring their vehicles are equipped with proper winter tires. Losing control on slick roads can happen quickly, making defensive driving essential in preventing serious crashes.
For those involved in weather-related accidents, seeking medical attention immediately is crucial, as injuries may not be immediately apparent. Victims may also explore legal options if another driver’s actions or roadway conditions contributed to the crash, helping to recover compensation for medical expenses, lost wages, and other damages.
