Tonopah, AZ (March 8, 2025) – A devastating chain-reaction crash involving 12 vehicles on Interstate 10 claimed the lives of four people, including an Arizona couple, and left several others injured last Saturday.
The victims have been identified as Melinda Kobold and her boyfriend, Dustin Cluff, who were traveling in an RV when they became part of the multi-vehicle pile-up just 14 miles west of Tonopah. Their vehicle caught fire during the crash, resulting in fatal injuries.
According to Melinda’s brother, Joseph Kobold, the couple had just returned from an off-roading trip in Glamis, California. Hours before the crash, they had survived a rollover accident but walked away unscathed. Tragically, their journey home ended in disaster on I-10.
Authorities are still investigating the cause of the crash, but low visibility from high winds and blowing dust may have played a significant role. Traffic on I-10 was heavily impacted as emergency crews responded to the scene.
Our thoughts are with the victims’ families and all those affected by this heartbreaking accident.
Dangers of Multi-Vehicle Crashes in Arizona
Pile-ups like the one on I-10 often occur due to poor visibility, sudden stops, and high-speed traffic conditions. Dust storms, strong winds, and unpredictable weather can significantly impact driving conditions, increasing the likelihood of chain-reaction crashes.
To stay safe in hazardous conditions, drivers should:
- Reduce speed and increase following distance in low-visibility areas
- Use headlights and hazard lights to improve visibility for other motorists
- Stay updated on weather conditions and avoid travel during dust storms
- Remain alert for sudden slowdowns and stopped vehicles ahead
