Benson, VT (March 7, 2024) – Emergency responders were called to a three-vehicle collision on Route 22A near East Rd on Thursday evening, which resulted in injuries and significant vehicle damage. The crash occurred at approximately 7:23 p.m. and involved a 1990 Ford Bronco, a 2012 Toyota Prius, and a 2008 Hyundai Elantra.
According to Vermont State Police, the accident happened when 20-year-old Devin Pellot, of Passaic, NJ, attempted to pass another southbound vehicle. Pellot lost control while trying to reenter the southbound lane, causing his Bronco to sideswipe a northbound Toyota Prius driven by Sierra Butler, 21, of South Burlington. The impact forced Butler’s vehicle off the roadway. Pellot’s vehicle then collided with a northbound Hyundai Elantra operated by Ashlee Curavoo, 31, of Castleton.
Emergency responders, including Fair Haven Rescue and the Benson Fire Department, arrived promptly to assist those involved. Curavoo sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to Rutland Regional Medical Center for treatment. The crash left her Hyundai Elantra totaled. Fortunately, Pellot and Butler did not report injuries. Authorities confirmed that all drivers were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash.
Police continue to investigate the accident, and civil violation charges are pending.
Multi-Vehicle Accidents in Vermont
Multi-vehicle crashes, like the one on Route 22A, highlight the dangers of passing maneuvers gone wrong, especially on highways with opposing traffic. In Vermont, two-lane roads with high-speed limits present increased risks for head-on and sideswipe collisions. Safe passing requires clear visibility, sufficient space, and full control of the vehicle. When a driver misjudges these factors, severe accidents can occur.
According to Vermont transportation data, a significant percentage of collisions involving failed passing attempts result in injuries or fatalities. Contributing factors include high speeds, sudden lane changes, and driver miscalculations. In some cases, distraction or poor road conditions also play a role.
Victims of multi-vehicle crashes often face serious consequences, from physical injuries to financial burdens. Medical bills, lost wages, and vehicle replacement costs can add stress to an already difficult situation. Seeking legal guidance and understanding insurance claims are crucial steps after a crash.
