Douglas County, KS (March 5, 2025) – A two-vehicle crash on U.S. Route 56 sent five people to the hospital Wednesday morning. The Kansas Highway Patrol (KHP) responded to the scene just after 7:30 a.m. near the border of Johnson and Douglas counties.
According to KHP, a 45-year-old man from Edgerton, Kansas, was driving a 2002 Ford F150 westbound when he lost control on the slick roadway. The truck veered left, crossing over the center line and colliding head-on with a 2016 Buick Encore.
The Ford driver, who was reportedly not wearing a seatbelt, sustained injuries. His 44-year-old passenger suffered serious injuries, while two children, ages 10 and 15, complained of pain. All four were transported to a hospital in Overland Park for treatment.
The driver of the Buick, a 64-year-old woman from Baldwin City, also sustained serious injuries and was taken to the same hospital. Both vehicles sustained significant damage and were towed from the scene.
Authorities continue to investigate the crash.
Our thoughts are with those injured, and we hope for a full recovery.
Head-on Collisions in Kansas
Head-on collisions are among the most dangerous types of crashes, often resulting in severe injuries due to the force of impact. In Kansas, weather-related road conditions, such as ice and rain, can increase the likelihood of drivers losing control, particularly on highways like U.S. Route 56.
According to traffic safety data, seatbelt usage significantly reduces the risk of fatal and severe injuries in collisions. In this crash, at least one driver was reportedly not wearing a seatbelt, which may have contributed to the severity of their injuries.
Drivers can reduce the risk of head-on crashes by adjusting speed for weather conditions, avoiding sudden maneuvers, and remaining alert in areas with oncoming traffic. However, even the most cautious drivers may be involved in accidents caused by roadway hazards or the actions of others.
For those injured in serious crashes, medical treatment, rehabilitation, and financial burdens can be overwhelming. Seeking legal guidance can help victims explore their options for compensation and recovery.
