Honolulu, HI (March 5, 2025) – An 81-year-old man suffered life-threatening injuries after being struck by a vehicle in a pedestrian crash on Ward Ave near Beretania St on Tuesday afternoon.
According to Honolulu police, the crash occurred around 4 p.m. when a 32-year-old driver was stopped at a red light at the intersection of Ward Ave and South Beretania St. Officers reported that the elderly pedestrian was in the crosswalk when he fell onto the ground, becoming obscured from the driver’s view.
When the traffic signal turned green, the driver proceeded northbound and unknowingly ran over the man lying in the roadway. Emergency Medical Services arrived and transported the pedestrian to the hospital in critical condition. The driver remained at the scene and was uninjured.
Authorities confirmed that speed, drugs, and alcohol were not contributing factors in the crash. The investigation is ongoing. Ward Ave was temporarily closed between Beretania and King streets as police worked to clear the scene.
Our thoughts are with the injured pedestrian, and we hope for a full and swift recovery.
Pedestrian Accidents in Hawaii
Hawaii has seen a concerning number of pedestrian-related crashes, especially in high-traffic areas like Ward Ave. Many pedestrian accidents occur at intersections, where visibility issues, distractions, or misjudgments can lead to severe injuries.
According to state data, elderly pedestrians are particularly vulnerable to serious injuries in roadway incidents due to slower reaction times and difficulty recovering from falls. Safety measures, including improved crosswalk visibility and public awareness campaigns, are essential to reducing these risks.
Victims of pedestrian accidents may face long-term medical challenges, rehabilitation, and financial burdens. Seeking legal guidance can help individuals understand their rights and explore options for compensation following a serious crash.
