Orlando, FL (March 5, 2025) – Authorities are investigating a fatal hit-and-run crash that occurred late Tuesday night on Sand Lake Road in Orange County.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), the collision happened just before midnight near Winegard Road. A vehicle traveling westbound struck a person on a motorized bicycle and fled the scene without stopping to assist the victim.

Emergency responders arrived at the crash site and transported the bicyclist to Orlando Regional Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead. Officials have not yet released the victim’s identity.

Investigators believe the suspect vehicle may be black, with damage to the front grille and broken headlights. FHP is urging anyone with information about the crash or the driver’s whereabouts to call 407-737-2213 or Crimeline at 800-423-TIPS.

As of 6:30 a.m., Sand Lake Road was cleared, and traffic was reopened in the area.

We extend our deepest sympathies to the victim’s family and loved ones during this difficult time.

Hit-and-Run Crashes in Florida

Hit-and-run accidents, like the tragic collision on Sand Lake Road, are a growing concern in Florida. According to state data, thousands of hit-and-run crashes occur each year, many resulting in severe injuries or fatalities. Drivers who flee the scene not only break the law but also leave victims without immediate medical assistance, worsening the outcome.

Pedestrians and cyclists are especially vulnerable in these crashes, as they have little protection against moving vehicles. Poor visibility, reckless driving, and driver inattention are common factors contributing to such incidents.

In cases like this, law enforcement relies on public tips and surveillance footage to identify and locate fleeing drivers. Those affected by hit-and-run crashes may be entitled to seek compensation through insurance claims or legal action, even if the at-fault driver is not immediately found.
