Orange Grove, TX (March 5, 2025) – A devastating three-vehicle collision in Orange Grove on Monday night claimed the life of a 1-year-old child and left multiple people hospitalized.
According to Jim Wells County Sheriff Joseph “Guy” Baker, the crash happened around 6 p.m. on Farm-to-Market Road 738 between Seim Lane and Rehmet Avenue. Emergency responders from the Orange Grove Police Department and the Texas Department of Public Safety arrived at the scene to assist those involved and investigate the incident.
Authorities reported that a silver Nissan Leaf, carrying the infant, was traveling north on FM 738 when its driver attempted to pass a white single-cab Ford F-250. As a black Nissan Altima approached from the opposite direction, the driver of the Nissan Leaf tried to return to their lane but was unable to do so in time.
The Nissan Leaf clipped the Ford F-250, causing it to spin and crash into the oncoming Nissan Altima. The Altima struck the right passenger side of the Nissan Leaf, where the infant was seated. Tragically, the child did not survive.
The drivers of all three vehicles were transported to the hospital for treatment. Their current conditions have not been released. Officials have not yet determined whether speed, driver miscalculation, or other factors contributed to the crash.
The Orange Grove Police Department and the Texas Department of Public Safety are actively investigating the accident. The Orange Grove police chief has not provided additional comments at this time.

The Dangers of Risky Passing Maneuvers on Texas Roads
Passing on two-lane roads can be dangerous, especially when drivers misjudge the speed or distance of oncoming traffic. In rural areas like FM 738, where designated passing lanes are limited, attempting to overtake slower vehicles can lead to devastating crashes, including head-on and side-impact collisions.
Many of these accidents occur when drivers underestimate the time needed to complete a pass or fail to anticipate sudden changes in traffic conditions. A split-second miscalculation can have life-altering consequences, particularly when multiple vehicles are involved.
Texas roadways see a significant number of passing-related collisions each year, often resulting in severe injuries or fatalities. Motorists are urged to assess road conditions carefully before making a passing maneuver, ensuring there is ample space and clear visibility ahead. Patience and defensive driving are essential in avoiding unnecessary risks on two-lane roads.
Even when some drivers follow the rules, accidents can still happen due to misjudgments or other unexpected roadway conditions. Families impacted by serious crashes often face immense emotional and financial burdens as they cope with medical expenses, funeral costs, and long-term recovery.
If you or a loved one has been involved in a serious auto accident, seeking legal and medical guidance can be crucial in understanding your rights and options for moving forward.
