Louisville, KY (March 4, 2025) – A Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) teacher was hospitalized after being struck by a car near Barret Traditional Middle School on Tuesday morning.
According to a letter sent to families, the teacher was supervising a hands-on science lesson outside when a ball rolled into the street. While retrieving it, she entered the crosswalk and was hit by a driver who reportedly did not see her.
The driver immediately stopped and called 911. Emergency responders arrived at the scene, and the teacher was transported to UofL Hospital. Officials confirmed that she was alert and conscious, and her injuries are believed to be non-life-threatening.
Louisville Metro Police Department’s Fifth Division is continuing to investigate the accident, but authorities stated that no charges are expected to be filed at this time.
School officials have acknowledged that some students witnessed the crash and have arranged for counselors to support those affected. Principal Amy Strite reassured families that the safety of students and staff remains a top priority, encouraging students and their families to reach out if additional support is needed.
Our thoughts are with the injured teacher, and we wish her a full recovery.
Pedestrian Safety and School Zone Awareness in Louisville
Accidents involving pedestrians, particularly in school zones, highlight the importance of driver awareness and caution near educational facilities. Even when crossing in a designated area, pedestrians remain vulnerable to inattentive or distracted drivers.
Authorities will assess visibility conditions, traffic patterns, and other potential contributing factors in this crash. School zones require extra vigilance from both drivers and pedestrians to prevent accidents, especially during student activities near roadways.
Drivers are urged to reduce speed in school zones, stay alert for pedestrians, and remain cautious at crosswalks. Schools continue to work on improving safety measures by reinforcing road awareness among students and staff.
If you or a loved one has been involved in a pedestrian accident, seeking medical care and understanding your legal rights can be crucial in the recovery process.
