Monroe County, FL (March 4, 2025) – Three people were critically injured and airlifted to a mainland hospital following a head-on collision on the Seven Mile Bridge in the Florida Keys on Monday afternoon.
According to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office and Florida Highway Patrol, the crash occurred around 2 p.m. when a GMC Denali pickup traveling south veered into the northbound lane for unknown reasons, colliding with a BMW SUV.
Emergency crews responded quickly to the scene, where firefighters had to extricate two individuals from the BMW. Both were taken by ambulance to Monroe County’s Trauma Star helicopter, which transported them to Jackson South Medical Center. The driver of the Denali, a Monroe County resident, was also airlifted to the same hospital for treatment.
Authorities identified the injured BMW occupants as a man and woman from Maryland. No fatalities were reported, and officials confirmed that alcohol does not appear to have played a role in the crash.
The collision caused significant delays as the Seven Mile Bridge was shut down in both directions until approximately 4 p.m. The Florida Highway Patrol is actively investigating the cause of the crash.
Our thoughts are with those injured, and we wish them a full recovery.
Head-On Collisions in Florida
Head-on collisions are among the most dangerous types of car accidents, often leading to severe injuries or fatalities. In Florida, these crashes are especially concerning on narrow or heavily traveled roadways like the Seven Mile Bridge, where limited passing opportunities and driver misjudgment can contribute to devastating outcomes.
Many head-on crashes result from driver distraction, drowsiness, or unexpected medical emergencies. In this case, investigators have not yet determined what caused the driver to enter the opposing lane. Regardless of the cause, the impact of such crashes can be life-altering for victims, leading to extensive medical treatment, rehabilitation, and long-term recovery challenges.
For those involved in severe accidents, seeking immediate medical care is crucial. Additionally, understanding legal options can help victims navigate medical expenses, lost wages, and potential compensation.
