Hockessin, DE (March 3, 2025) – The Delaware State Police are investigating a tragic two-vehicle crash that claimed the life of a young child on Sunday afternoon in Hockessin.
The accident occurred on March 2, 2025, at approximately 4:09 p.m., when a silver 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee was traveling southbound on Newport Gap Pike, near the intersection with Valley Ln. At the same time, a gray 2017 Freightliner tractor-trailer was traveling northbound on the same roadway. For reasons still under investigation, the Jeep reportedly veered into the northbound lane, directly into the path of the oncoming Freightliner. This resulted in a devastating head-on collision.
Emergency responders were quick to the scene, working to assist those suffering from injuries. A 2-year-old male passenger in the Jeep, from Kennett Square, Pennsylvania, was rushed to an area hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. His identity is being withheld pending family notifications.
The Jeep’s driver, a 36-year-old man from Kennett Square, PA, suffered serious injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. Other passengers in the Jeep, including a 34-year-old woman, a 16-year-old male, and an 11-year-old female, also from Kennett Square, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were taken to local hospitals. Initial reports indicated that at least one occupant of the Jeep was trapped and had to be extricated before being transported.
The driver of the Freightliner, a 60-year-old man from North East, Maryland, was unharmed in the crash.
The accident led to the closure of Newport Gap Pike for approximately seven hours while authorities conducted their investigation and cleared the roadway. Police continue to investigate the circumstances that led to the collision.
