Oakley, KS (March 3, 2025) – A fatal crash occurred on westbound Interstate 70 in Thomas County on Saturday morning when a pickup truck attempted an illegal U-turn, resulting in a collision with another vehicle.
According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, the crash took place at approximately 8:47 a.m., about a mile east of Oakley. Reports indicate that a 2011 Ford Ranger and a 2015 Ford F-250 were both traveling westbound in the right lane when the F-250 moved into the passing lane to overtake the Ranger. At that moment, the Ranger attempted to make an illegal U-turn and was struck by the F-250.
Both vehicles came to a stop in the median following the impact. The driver of the Ranger, identified as 69-year-old Jane Nutting of Wakeeney, sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Officials confirmed that she was wearing her seat belt at the time of the crash.
The driver of the F-250, identified as 51-year-old Leonardo Gonzalez of Wheat Ridge, CO, was towing a trailer at the time of the collision. He suffered injuries and was transported to Logan County Hospital in Oakley for treatment. Authorities reported that Gonzalez was not wearing a seat belt.
The Kansas Highway Patrol continues to investigate the circumstances of the crash. As officials review the incident, further details may be released.
Our thoughts are with the family and loved ones of Jane Nutting, and we wish Leonardo Gonzalez a full recovery.
Dangers of Illegal U-Turns and Highway Collisions
Illegal U-turns on highways pose significant risks to both the driver making the maneuver and other motorists on the road. High-speed traffic conditions on interstates like I-70 make it extremely dangerous to attempt sudden lane changes or unauthorized turns, as oncoming vehicles have little time to react.
Collisions caused by improper turning movements often result in serious or fatal injuries, particularly when they occur at highway speeds. Factors such as driver distraction, poor judgment of oncoming traffic, and limited visibility can all contribute to crashes involving sudden U-turn attempts.
To improve safety on highways, drivers should adhere to traffic regulations, use designated exits for turning, and ensure their actions do not put others at risk. Avoiding abrupt lane changes, checking for oncoming traffic, and maintaining awareness of surrounding vehicles can help prevent serious collisions.
For families affected by fatal crashes, seeking legal guidance can help them understand their options following a tragic loss. Investigating liability and securing necessary support can be essential in handling the aftermath of a devastating accident.
